Grade 10 Narrative Writing – A Time I Faced a Difficult Challenge
In this narrative writing task, students practise writing a well-organised story about a real-life challenge. They describe the problem, explain why it was difficult, show the turning point, and end with a lesson learned. The story should be clear, interesting, and contain at least 100 words.
WRITING TASK
Write a narrative about “a time you faced a difficult challenge.”
Use these questions to help you organise your story:
- What was the challenge?
- Why was it difficult?
- Who helped you (if anyone)?
- What was the climax (turning point)?
- How did the situation end?
- What lesson did you learn?
Your writing should be clear and organized.
Model Narrative (Sample Answer)
One of the most difficult challenges I ever faced happened last year during my final school exams. A week before the exams, I became seriously ill and could not attend school. I felt worried and afraid because I had missed many important lessons. The challenge was difficult because I had very little time to study while trying to recover. My older brother helped me by explaining difficult lessons and preparing revision notes. The turning point came when I created a strict study schedule and followed it every day. Slowly, I began to understand the subjects better and felt more confident. When the exams ended, I realised that I had done well despite the difficulties. This experience taught me that hard work, organisation, and support from family can help overcome any challenge in life.
Final Writing Tips
- Start by introducing the challenge clearly.
- Describe events in chronological order.
- Use past tense verbs consistently.
- Include emotions to make the story realistic.
- Highlight the turning point and how the problem was solved.
- End with a meaningful lesson learned.
- Check grammar, spelling, and punctuation carefully.
